National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) visits the Fast Hybrid Testing Facility at NEES-Colorado

July 16, 2008

The Chief Engineer of the National Wind Technology Center (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Department of Energy) accompanied by a team of five engineers visited the Fast Hybrid Testing Laboratory at the University of Colorado on July 16. This meeting was co-organized by Professor Lucy Pao (Department of Electrical Engineering, and Director of the Center for Research and Education in Wind, CREW) who specializes in Control.

Following an introduction to NEES, a visit of the facility, and description of the concept of fast hybrid testing, technical discussion was held with CU-NEES personnel.

Discussion focused on applicability of hybrid simulation to improve design of wind turbines to complement expensive full-scale testing.

It was decided that joint proposals (NREL, CU-EE, and CU-NEES) should be explored and an invitation was extended for CU-NEES to visit NREL's facility to gain a better appreciation for potential collaboration.
